Try microsoft's security essentials. Though Bost AVG and avast should work on vista.

McAfee is installed on my computer - I have Windows 7 so I can tell you it works on XP to 7 including Vista. It's proboably the most known AntiVirus Software to date. With McAfee, you have firewalls, pop-up blockers, it even asks you what to do like this:

This Program wants to access files on your computer. What do you want to do?

[Always trust]
[No]
[Never]

It's useful in the sense that if a file was to try and access your computer, it will just ask you if it can.
If you are getting Pop-Ups as well, then use STOPzilla.
