Hi John...kneading seems to be more of a comforting action for cats since it mainly takes place during periods of happiness and contentment. It is also a behaviour that is a remnant from kittenhood. They would knead their mother's teets to stimulate milk production.
Like everyone else who has answered, it's an action of contentment. My kitty does it to my stomach when she cuddles up to me before sleeping.
I also agree with what people have said about the kneading the teat before nursing. That would make sense actually.
I was told that they do this when they were taken from their mothers at a young age. Two of my cats have done this.
It is a sign of affection
i have 2 cats that do that and its cuz of 1 of my blankets my mom made they no when thwhy do cats knead thingseres milk in yarn but its natural cuz it makes them feel safe
i don't know. i guess they do it to make what they are kneading comfortable and soft.
my kitten has a habbit of jumping on me when i lay down and starts to knead my boobies.
They're trying to get milk. My kitten was doing it to a fluffy cushion today he was so happy padding away there :)
i was wondering that a while ago but i found out, so il share my info with you you lucky thing lol!
you may notice your cat does this on soft material to or your stomach. they do this as kittens when they do not have claws to stimulate bloodflow around thier mothers teats to make milk come out. cats arent aware this hurts us, so if we say 'ow' or push them away, their primal insticts are altared unknowiwhy do cats knead thingsngly
hope this helped and one last thing, i bet youve had your cat since it was a kitten and your or someone in your family raised it?
bye!x
Several theories exist for the behavior. Some people think it stems from them being weaned too young. Some think it is because they were weaned too late. The most logical explanation, however, is that it's simply a comfort behavior that cats remember from when they are babies. Nursing kittens use similar paw and arm movements to stimulate milk flow from their mothers' breasts. Momma cat also kneads the sleeping area to create a nice soft surface for her and her kittens. Whatever the precise reason for kneading, one thing is for sure: A kneady cat is a happy cat.
